Arsenal need a long-term replacement for Nacho Monreal who is in the eve of his career at the Emirates. Manchester United defender Luke Shaw looks on his way out of Old Trafford this summer after his fallout with manager Jose Mourinho. Should the Gunners line up a bid?
Arsene Wenger has Monreal and Sead Kolasinac as left-back options in the squad, but the former is 32 and has less than 18 months left on his deal. Shaw ticks a lot of boxes for Arsenal, being a homegrown and attack-minded defender who wouldn’t break the bank, so he’s surely worth considering.
His future looks uncertain in Manchester as Mourinho has preferred a 32-year-old winger at left-back this season, affording Shaw just seven Premier League appearances. Arsenal have used Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Reiss Nelson as makeshift left-backs, so a player like Shaw would be welcomed at the Emirates.
The youngster has been short of form and confidence due to a hellish spell at Old Trafford, but he’s still only 22 and has the best years of his career ahead of him. He could provide ten years of service if managed well and wouldn’t be hard to sign given his situation.
Shaw is valued at around £12m, earns £70k-per-week and is out of contract in less than 18 months. He’s spent the majority of the season out of the matchday squad and would surely jump at the chance to join Arsenal. Worth a punt?
