According to Don Balon, Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric wants to join Arsenal this summer. The 32-year-old is believed to have asked the Spanish giants to let him leave at the end of the season, although there any many holes in this story.
Firstly, Modric has been a regular in the Real Madrid side ever since his 2012-move from Tottenham Hotspur, making more than 240 appearances in all competitions, so it’s hard to see the club granting his alleged desire to leave. He remains a key player alongside Toni Kroos and Casemiro in the midfield.
Secondly, if the Croatian international was to leave Real, there would be a lot of suitors keen on landing his signature. Why would a former Tottenham midfielder be so desperate to join rivals Arsenal, given he turned them down in the past? The Gunners are having a woeful Premier League campaign, currently sitting six and 10 points adrift of the top-four. Would Modric really go from Real to Arsenal?
Thirdly, are Arsenal Wenger’s recruitment team really in bid for the 32-year-old? His advancing age means no re-sale value, and he’d set the London club a lot of money in wages for the short-term. Arsenal haven’t shown much of an interest in Modric in recent years either, so this potential summer move would be a surprise.
