Arsenal signed Lucas Perez from Deportivo in 2016 and loaned him back to the Spanish La Liga side less than 12 months later. However, it turns out Lucas isn’t having the best homecoming, revealing to Marca that he’s taken a lot of flak from supporters as a result of his struggles.
The 29-year-old has managed just four goals in 25 league appearances this season, with Deportivo sitting 19th in the table, seven points adrift of safety. The woeful form of the club has led to criticism from the fans, but Lucas said he’s also been singled out by those who once chanting his name with pride at the Estadio Riazor.
“It is normal for people to feel disappointed in me, I am also disappointed in myself,” he said. “I am disappointed on a personal level. I am sad because I had many visions about the team coming out and turning things round.
“What we need is a victory. A victory changes everything. It is a plus and a light at the end of the tunnel. What I most feel is frustration. It’s frustrating that you do not get things out.”
Deportivo look destined for the drop as things stand. They have a seven-point deficit to make up and only nine games in which to do it. Only Malaga (3) have won fewer fames (4), but no side have shipped as many goals as Depor (60) this season.
Their next game, which isn’t for two weeks due to the international break, is away to Atletico Madrid. Clarence Seedorf’s side are currently 14 games without a win in La Liga, scoring just eight goals for their troubles.
You can see why Lucas is regretting the move back to Depor last summer but he may not be wanted at Arsenal next season either, as the Gunners have Alexandre Lacazette, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Danny Welbeck as options up front.
