Irrespective of whether Arsene Wenger stays or goes in the summer, one position where Arsenal must bolster is the central defence.

The Gunners have the likes of Per Mertesacker, Laurent Koscielny, Rob Holding and Shkodran Mustafi as the four main centre-backs. Throw Calum Chambers into the mix and you’ve five good players – and yet the question arises – are they really good enough?

This a defensive unit that conceded 14 goals at home in the Premier League and 36 goals overall – more than any other side in the top six.

With Mertesacker likely to leave at the end of the season, the Gunners must sign a top quality centre-back to add depth and quality to the squad.

In fact, it is not just about adding numbers. Arsenal need a leader at the back — a player who can inspire the team by setting examples.

And that is why the Gunners must spend big in the summer to lure Kalidou Koulibaly from Serie A giants Napoli.

The 26-year-old joined Napoli in 2014 and has established himself as one of the finest defenders in the world at the moment.

He has a contract at the club till 2021 and is highly rated by the Napoli hierarchy. He has gone from strength to strength and it is clear why big European clubs are keen to sign him.

A tall, powerful, and quick defender Koulibaly is good at making tackles and clearances. In an era, where greater focus is being laid on making interceptions, the Napoli defender bucks the trend. That doesn’t mean he is not good at reading the game.

Being a physically strong defender, he wins a fair share of arial duels, and that is one area where he can add quality to the Arsenal side.

The former Genk defender is equally good with the ball on his feet, and his impressive 91.4% passing accuracy shows his confident playing style that would suit the Gunners.

He is likely to command a fee in excess of £40 million, but given his quality and experience, Arsenal should move ahead of other rivals in securing his signature.
