Holding Midfielder; The Missing Piece Of The Arsenal Jigsaw?

The club has been linked with numerous defensive Midfielders in recent weeks and now rumours are circulating that Wenger is due to pull the plug in the pursuit of a world Class midfield general at this stage and stick with what he has. Abou “like a new signing” Diaby is “fit” again but who knows how long the leggy Midfielder will last before his body crumbles for yet another season. Then there is the ever over exaggerated talents of England’s “saviour” the FA’s “prodigal son” Jack Wilshere. Wilshere has apparently been highlighted as a possible holding midfield player so the likes of Aaron Ramsey can concentrate doing damage in the opposing final third. Can this really be on the cards?

Wilshere who has grown up in the Arsenal academy since the age of 9 has been one of the most frustrating players in recent seasons, admittedly he has suffered from injuries in recent times but his attitude has left a bitter taste. He really needs to take a leaf out of Welsh playmaker Aaron Ramsey who has always given his all even through his much publicised loss of form which saw many of the Arsenal faithful predict an Emirates exit. Another problem with this idea would be his strength or lack of it, we would find ourselves encountering the same problem as the last few seasons. Mike Arteta has been treading water for a relatively long time now and has done an admirable job considering he has been playing in a position that is alien to him.

The club really need to invest in a world class holding midfield player, he does not have to be your typical “destroyer” in the mold of the likes of Javier Mascherano but it is a position that needs to be seriously addressed it is something that has not been rectified since the departure of Gilberto Silva in 2008. Mathieu Flamini like Arteta has performed well in this position but with them both the wrong side of 30 years of age a change is needed if serious honours are to return to the Emirates next season.

There has been a clear shift in transfer policy at the Emirates this season with the arrival of Mathieu Debuchy and Alexis Sanchez and more players are expected to follow. Priority must now be a holding midfield man, it was the Achilles heal from last season’s campaign and if we are to avoid a similar implosion next season this must be addressed. There are various names that have been identified as possible targets the one problem could be Wenger’s valuation of a player which has come back to bite the club in the past. Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin has been linked recently but would seemingly carry a price tag of £20 million which would be a no go as far as I am concerned. Sami Khedira would be the kind of midfield player I would be looking at although not an orthodox holding midfielder he would add a bit of class to our midfield and is clearly surplus to requirements at Madrid as they try to recoup some of the money they spent on James Rodriguez.
