Arsenal manager Unai Emery has appeared to suggest that he will be retaining Petr Cech in goal when the Blues play against London rivals Chelsea in a Premier League clash on Saturday.

Emery made his Premier League debut in disappointing fashion last weekend as the Gunners suffered a 2-0 defeat against Manchester City through goals from Raheem Sterling and Bernado Silva. In defence of the former PSG boss, he did face a difficult task against arguably the best side in the Premier League.

Arsenal are also on a rebuilding phase following the end of Arsene Wenger’s 22-year reign. Realistically, Gunners fans can realistically expect nothing less than a top four finish this season which will be a step in the right direction, considering that the club has not qualified for Europe’s Premier Club competition during the past two seasons.

While winning the Premier League will be a big bonus, it will be a difficult task.  One of the big talking points from the City defeat was whether Cech should retain his place in favor of the younger Bernd Leno.

While Cech did make some fine saves against the Citizens, some argue that the 36-year-old is struggling to adapt to the new playing style which Emery is introducing, so much so that he had almost scored a comical own-goal.

Emery acquired Leno from German club Bayer Leverkusen during the summer transfer window for a fee of £22 million in order to bolster his goalkeeping ranks. Leno arrives at the Emirates with an impressive reputation, however, the German is error-prone.

Emery is seemingly backing Cech to once again start during the game against Chelsea.

The tactician said according to The Telegraph: “I am very happy with Cech’s performance – he has experience, he has quality, he has the capacity,”

“Also, with Bernd Leno. They are two goalkeepers who are important for us.

“They have different qualities but for us in the way we want to play, they can [both] play. For Saturday, the decision for me is easy. Petr Cech can continue to start the match, I believe in him. If Bernd starts, I believe in him also.”
