Deadline Day looms, who will Wenger sign?

The cheeky smile said it all, as the Sky Sports reporter questioned Wenger after the 1-0 North London Derby win over Tottenham, Arsenal fans could see for once, the boss had let his guard down.

SS Reporter “Just over 24 hours left till the transfer window closes, what will we see?”

AW “You will see what we will announce you if we sign somebody, I promise you that we will be very quick to announce it but, Maybe we will have a good surprise for you.”

And then there was that smile.

The smile that everybody in red and white remembers. (It’s 2 minutes and 40 seconds into this clip if you weren’t around at the time http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isQNSsTFa2E)

Simply put, Arsenal fans spent the next 30 hours wondering who would join us, Julian Draxler? No, Angel Di Maria? No.

Mesut Ozil, the leading assist provider in Europe was joining Arsenal in a little over 24 hours time.

Fast forward 12 months. Sadly a North London derby isn’t going to be the platform for Wenger to announce another wry smile as he reminds us that nobody actually knows what is going on at The Emirates no matter how much anybody claims to be ‘In the know’.

Khedira playing as Germanys Holding man
By the time we play Besiktas it is likely some deals will have been ‘discussed’ as no doubt some players will want confirmation we are in group stage of the Champions League rather than the Europa League, but who is likely to be coming in through the door in the next week and few days?

Names such as Sami Khedira, William Carvalho, Lars and Sven Bender, Edinson Cavani, Falcao to name a few have been banded about in the window so far.

With Arsenal fans crying out for a genuine central defensive midfielder (Arteta is NOT the answer) they could well be forgiven for being heavily disappointed should a real player not be bought into this position. Having said that, many fans on twitter have made a valid point that to be real title contenders, a Central Defender and a World Class striker is what is needed to make Arsenal a threat to Manchester City and Chelsea this season. But how much money is actually available to strengthen these three key positions?

Unusually Arsenal at this point have spent the most money on any player in the Premier League, something Arsenal fans weren’t expecting with Manchester City and Chelsea flexing their financial muscle as well. But is it going to be even more money spent as we approach September the 1st?

Some handy hints to get you through the next few difficult days.

Ignore Goal and Caught Offside – please I beg of you. These websites are hit machines which have no substance to the story what so ever. Apparently QPR’s newest addition  Eduardo Vargas was having a medical with us on Monday 18th August according to Goal – the Liverpool Bound Mario Balotelli had signed for us back in August if you believe Caught Offside as well!

So simply put, ignore the ITK’s on twitter, ignore the speculation and wait for a genuine credible source like the BBC or Sky Sports to tell you when things are going through. Because lets face it, nobody saw Kim Kallstrom coming in untill the final day of the January window did they?
