Alexis Sanchez’s Chile, who have won the Copa American in its last two tournaments, were hoping to qualify for their third successive World Cup after reaching the tournament last 16 in 2010 and 2014.
Chile began the final round of matches in third place, but Sanchez and Co fell behind to two Brazil goals in three second-half minutes from Paulinho and Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus.
With Peru netting a late equaliser against Colombia, Juan Antonio Pizzi’s side needed to score to be in the play-offs. In injury-time Sanchez’s side attacked with all of their players, including goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, in the Brazil half.
After a goalles first half, the 2014 World Cup host took the lead in the 55th minute when Chile goalie Claudio Bravo could only ward off Dani Alves’ long free kick back into the middle of the box when the Barcelona’s forward tapped in the rebound.
The lead was doubled two minutes later, when Philippe Coutinho played a long pass forward that landed at the feet of Neymar, who passed across for Gabriel Jesus to score into an empty net.
Manchester City striker Gabriel added a third in stoppage time to seal Chile’s fate.
