According to Corriere dello Sport, Juventus have joined Arsenal in the race for Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez. The 23-year-old has an uncertain future at the Wanda Metropolitano after struggling for game time earlier in the season, but he could set sides back £52.7m as per his release clause.
Gimenez joined Atleti from Danubio in 2013 and has become a stellar centre-back in La Liga ever since. He hardly featured for Diego Simeone in the first-half of the campaign, however, racking up just five league starts between August and January which raised questions over his future.
Arsenal are in the race for the Uruguay international as they could be short in the defence this summer. Per Mertesacker is retiring to become the Head of Academy while Laurent Koscielny turns 33 in September and has struggled with a chronic ankle injury.
Shkodran Mustafi has been inconsistent since joining from Valencia, leaving the inexperienced Calum Chambers and Rob Holding as options in the defence. Gimenez has a £52.7m release clause if Arsenal are interested in signing him but fending off Juventus’ interest will be a task.
Convincing the Atletico Madrid centre-back to leave Spain for a move to the Emirates Stadium might also be a challenge given he is playing regularly in 2018. Arsenal might not pay such a lofty price for a defender either.
