According to UOL Esporte, Arsenal are interested in Corinthians midfielder Maycon. The 20-year-old was linked with a move to Ukrainian Premier League side Shakhtar Donetsk before the deal broke down and now the Gunners are looking to capitalise.

Maycon joined Corinthians from Ponte Preta in 2016 and has gone on to make more than 40 appearances in all competitions. The Brazilian u20 international has three years left on his deal at the Corinthians Arena but his future is uncertain given all the interest in Europe.

Arsenal are shopping for a midfielder as Mohamed Elneny hardly features under Arsene Wenger and was nearly sold the previous summer. Jack Wilshere is out of contract at the end of the season and doesn’t appear close to signing a new deal with the Gunners.

Aaron Ramsey will be out of contract in less than 18 months and has yet to reach an agreement with Arsenal over an extension. Coupled with the inconsistent form of Granit Xhaka, it’s clear the London outfit need to strengthen their options in the engine room.

Maycon is more defensive-minded, averaging a tackle or interception every 28 minutes and averages 50 passes-per-game in the Brazilian Serie A. He can be creative at times, making 34 chances, but he’s a player that will impress in a deep-lying role more than an advanced one.

For £9m, the youngster could be a bargain for Arsenal.
