Arsenal made a spectacular start to the 2022-23 season, winning 12 of their 14 matches to top the Premier League standings. They are now regarded as strong title contenders following their impressive victories over Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur earlier this campaign. Manchester City are still firm favourites to retain their title but they will have to be at their best to beat the Gunners who look intent on lifting their first league trophy since 2004.
While City succumbed to a disappointing 2-1 loss against Brentford, Mikel Arteta’s side brushed aside Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 in their final clash before the 2022 World Cup. That victory guaranteed the Lononders would remain at the top on Christmas.
Arsenal added several quality players in the summer, including Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Fabio Vieira. But there are still some areas where they need reinforcements, and the club hierarchy are reportedly willing to back Arteta in January to help maintain their title push in the second half of the campaign. They are said to be looking to add a winger and a midfielder in order to ease the load on Bukayo Saka and Granit Xhaka.
Arsenal Fixtures in December
Premier League football will resume on Boxing Day (26 December), just eight days after the World Cup final in Qatar. Arsenal will also be in action on the same day but they also have a few more matches to play before their return to the English top flight.
Mikel Arteta’s men will cross swords with Lyon and AC Milan in the Dubai Super Cup before hosting Juventus for a club friendly on 17th December. The Gunners will then take on West Ham United on Boxing Day and will travel to Brighton & Hove Albion for their next Premier League fixture in December. Both sides don’t look very daunting opponents and the North Londoners have a perfect opportunity to maintain pressure on title rivals Manchester City by sealing full points from the two fixtures.
