According to the Telegraph, Arsenal are interested in Schalke midfielder Max Meyer, with the future of Jack Wilshere remaining in the air. The English international is out of contract this summer and has yet to agree terms on an extension. As a result, the Gunners are lining up replacements.

Meyer is also out of contract at the end of the season and has many clubs keen on his signature. The 22-year-old joined Schalke from MSV Duisburg Jugend in 2009 and has gone on to make 191 appearances in all competitions for the Bundesliga outfit.

The German international, who boasts one goal in four games for his country at senior level, looks destined to exit the Veltins-Arena this summer as he’s failed to agree terms on a new contract. Arsenal are hoping to capitalise on the situation, but Liverpool and Bayer Munich’s interest could prove a stumbling block.

Head of Recruitment Sven Mislintat knows the Bundesliga from his time at Borussia Dortmund and has identified a potential replacement for Wilshere, should the 26-year-old leave on a free transfer in three months. Meyer is good at retaining possession and averages a tackle or interception every 17 minutes in the league.

He could have many years to shine at Arsenal if the Gunners did win the race for his services, but Bayern might prove a more attractive proposition.
