David Ornstein: Arsenal on verge of ‘total agreement’ with Newcastle United for Bruno Guimaraes

Arsenal are closing in on one of the biggest signings of the summer transfer window.

According to renowned journalist David Ornstein, Arsenal and Newcastle United are nearing a total agreement for the transfer of midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

The Brazilian has made his intentions crystal clear after informing Newcastle last month that he wants to complete a move to the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal initially indicated they were willing to pay up to £60 million, but Newcastle quickly rejected that proposal.

The negotiations have dragged on for more than a month, yet there is now growing optimism that all parties are ready to bring the saga to a successful conclusion.

Guimaraes is awaiting permission to undergo a medical and seal a move to the Premier League champions.

Manager Mikel Arteta has made signing an elite midfielder one of his key priorities as he looks to retain the Premier League title and finally conquer Europe.

Guimaraes moved to the Magpies from Olympique Lyon in January 2022.

He quickly developed into one of the most complete midfielders in the English top flight and eventually earned the captain’s armband at St James’ Park.

The 28-year-old would represent a transformative signing for the Gunners and further strengthen their status as favourites to retain the Premier League crown.

Despite battling fitness concerns last season, the Brazilian still produced an impressive return of nine goals and five assists in 29 league appearances.

Arteta could now unleash a formidable midfield partnership featuring Declan Rice and Bruno Guimaraes.

Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino and Myles Lewis-Skelly provide additional midfield options. Christian Norgaard is expected to join Everton after spending just one campaign at the Emirates Stadium.
