Arsenal vs Chelsea Preview: Gunners aim to pile the pressure on inconsistent Blues and extend excellent derby record

Arsenal welcome rivals Chelsea to the Emirates Stadium for a blockbuster showdown that could have massive repercussions for the Premier League title race and the push for a Champions League place.

In a season that has swung dramatically from week to week, the title race has felt as unpredictable as a spin on fire joker mobile, the popular slots game known for its sudden bursts of fortune. Just as players wait for the right symbols to align, both Arsenal and Chelsea know that one big result here could transform their campaign in an instant.

The Gunners had lost their way in the bid to reclaim the Premier League crown for the first time since 2004. They won only three of their first eight league games in 2026.

However, Arsenal got themselves back on track with a morale-boosting victory over North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and will look to kick on from there.

Meanwhile, inconsistency continues to derail Chelsea. Back-to-back draws against teams battling relegation leave them in danger of missing out on Champions League football.

Liam Rosenior’s tenure at the club has been underwhelming, but this is a chance for the English tactician to turn the tide.

With both sides eager for the win, this promises to be an enthralling match-up between two rivals with points to prove.

Arsenal vs Chelsea: Match Preview

Arsenal fans were never relaxed, even when Mikel Arteta’s boys had an eight-point lead at the top of the table. They had seen similar advantages evaporate over the years.

Just like a badly scripted movie, it was happening all over again. A loss to Manchester United, draws against Liverpool, Nottingham Forest, Brentford, and relegation-bound Wolverhampton Wanderers.

All of a sudden, the lead was down to two points. Arsenal badly needed to get back on the winning wagon, and thankfully, their downtrodden rivals, Tottenham, were the perfect victims.

Arsenal went to their stadium and mullered them 4-1, further entrenching Spurs in a relegation battle and moving five points clear of Manchester City in the title race.

The Gunners aim to carry that momentum into this Chelsea clash, and they will be buoyed by their excellent record in London derbies generally.

Arteta has won 42 of his 69 Premier League London derbies as manager, the best win rate (60.8%) of anyone to take charge of at least 20 such matches.

Meanwhile, Chelsea dismissed Enzo Maresca after a string of disappointing results and clashes with the board. They hired Rosenior despite more high-profile options available.

His record in West London is respectable, but he suffered defeat twice against Arsenal in the League Cup. Recent draws with Leeds United and Burnley in the league have left a lot to be desired.

Rosenior talked a big game when he arrived, but his team is struggling to back it up. With Liverpool breathing down their necks, they could drop out of the top five this weekend.

Chelsea’s recent record against Arsenal will also worry the manager as they prepare for what could be a make-or-break clash.

Arsenal vs Chelsea Head to Head

Chelsea’s decline since the arrival of the Todd Boehly/Clearlake Consortium is perfectly reflected in their poor record against Arsenal since 2021.

The Blues have failed to win any of their last 10 games against Arsenal in all competitions (L7, D3).

They have locked horns in eight Premier League meetings in that run, and the Gunners have come out on top five times (D3).

Chelsea have a massive mountain to climb as Arsenal are imperious at home, losing only one of their 13 games at the Emirates this term (W10, D2).

However, it is worth noting that Chelsea have fared reasonably better on the road than at Stamford Bridge and will be desperate to end their poor run of form.

Team News

Bukayo Saka came off for Noni Madueke in the win over Spurs, and Arteta will be sweating on his fitness for this game.

Kai Havertz and Ben White also missed the Spurs clash due to injuries. It remains to be seen if the German will be ready in time for this weekend.

Thankfully, youngster Max Dowman is close to returning, but Mikel Merino faces a race against time to play again this season.

As for Chelsea, Marc Cucurella, Jamie Gittens, and Filip Jorgensen are out injured, while Wesley Fofana is suspended. Levi Colwill is still recovering from an ACL setback.
