Arsenal vs Tottenham Hotspur: The History of the North London Derby

Arsenal’s rivalry with Tottenham Hotspur is arguably a head-to-head where ‘one-upmanship’ matters more than many other local derbies.

That point is currently being hammered home by many Spurs fans, who would rather their team lost against a title contender rather than hand an advantage to the Gunners.

That mindset will be alien to supporters who enjoy sports betting. They understand that you should never bet against your own team, no matter what the circumstances are.

Players who visit non Gamstop casino platforms similarly understand that the aim of the game is to win. Too many Spurs fans have ditched that mindset.

It hasn’t always been that way, with Tottenham’s two league title successes in the 1950s and 1960s briefly allowing them to lord it over Arsenal.

However, the balance of power has undoubtedly shifted since then, as evidenced by each club’s head-to-head record and trophy count.

Tottenham have won just 15 of their 67 league meetings since the competition was rebranded, which is a poor record for a club of their so-called stature.

A bigger concern is their tally of league titles since 1960/61, which stands at the grand total of zero. By contrast, Arsenal have finished topof the table six times since Spurs last achieved the feat.

The trend of Arsenal dominance over the past few decades has largely been mirrored throughout the history of the north London derby.

Herbert Chapman’s legendary Gunners were a behemoth in English football during the 1930s, and further successes followed after the end of the Second World War.

Tottenham’s two league title successes gave them hope of flipping the narrative, but the power soon switched back to Arsenal towards the end of the 1960s.

Aside from sporadic successes in cup competitions since then, Tottenham have done nothing to earn their so-called status as a ‘big club’ other than build a shiny new stadium.

The Arsene Wenger era hammered home the point that Arsenal are the number one club in north London, and nothing has changed since he left.

Current manager Mikel Arteta has built a squad which is the envy of the other half of the equation and one which looks destined to win plenty of silverware over the next few years.

By contrast, Tottenham have been lurching from crisis to another, cementing their status as one of the biggest ‘banter clubs’ of the Premier League era.
