Preview: Liverpool vs Arsenal – H2H, Best XIs, How to Watch & More

Liverpool and Arsenal will lock horns in a mouth-watering Premier League clash at Anfield on August 31.

As defending champions, the Reds entered the season with a huge target on their backs, and Arsenal will be hoping they can knock them off their perch.

It was hardly a title race last term as Liverpool ran off into the sunset with the league title. They finished 10 points ahead of second-placed Arsenal.

For the fourth year running, the Gunners are hoping to finally land the elusive title and have spared no expense to make sure Mikel Arteta has all the tools to make it happen.

This contest is always a blockbuster, so there’s no doubt that fans will be keen to catch all the live action from inside Anfield.

Those interested in booking a spot in the stands ahead of time can explore available seats for Liverpool matches on Seatsnet, with the Reds looking for a statement win on home turf.

Match Preview

Liverpool have started the campaign as they mean to go on. They clinically dispatched Bournemouth 4-2 on opening day, although there are a few pointers they can take from the entertaining fixture.

Manager Arne Slot will need to work on his defence to bolster their chances of retaining the crown, but Liverpool are certainly not lacking goals at the top end of the pitch.

Big money signing Hugo Ekitike properly introduced himself to the club faithful with a stunning goal on his debut, and they’d expect more of the same when Arsenal visit Anfield.

The only question mark from Slot’s free-firing machine so far is the £116 million signing of Florian Wirtz, although he might need some time to find his feet in Merseyside.

Meanwhile, Arsenal were far from convincing on opening day as they bested Manchester United by a narrow 1-0 scoreline thanks to their lethal corner routine.

The Gunners will be the first to admit that they were outplayed at Old Trafford.

They may have gotten away with that one, but they need to make sure they improve in the coming fixtures to reinforce belief in their title ambitions.

The upcoming game against newly promoted Leeds United should give Arsenal a platform to flex their muscle ahead of the blockbuster at Anfield.

It might be too early to be a title decider, but several conclusions regarding the ambitions of both clubs will be drawn from the result of the contest.

Head to Head

The rivalry between Liverpool and Arsenal has been intense over the past few years, and fans could be in for another exhilarating encounter at Anfield on August 31.

Neither side have come out on top in their last two Premier League meetings, playing out a 2-2 draw in each game.

The most recent result came at Anfield when Arsenal overturned a two-goal deficit to snatch a point.

The roles were reversed in the previous 2-2 draw when a late goal from Mohamed Salah made sure that Liverpool left the Emirates Stadium with a point in the bag.

Now preparing for yet another epic battle at Anfield, the odds are firmly in Liverpool’s favour given their sparkling home record against the Gunners.

You’d have to go back well over a decade for the last time Arsenal picked up a win at Anfield. In that run, Liverpool have won seven out of their 12 home games against the Gunners (D5).

However, Arsenal can also take pride from the fact that they haven’t lost any of their last three visits to Anfield (D3), but getting a win this time around would be a massive statement.

Best XIs

Liverpool

Allison will retain his place between the sticks, with a backline of Jeremie Frimpong, Ibrahima Konate, Virgil Van Dijk, and Milos Kerkez ahead of him.

After a string of exceptional performances that helped Liverpool win the title last season, it’ll take injuries to force Slot into tweaking his midfield duo of Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister.

Big-money signing Florian Wirtz has hardly gotten the crowd off their seats and could be replaced by Dominik Szoboszlai in the number 10 role at least until he’s fully settled in Merseyside.

The Hungarian midfielder should have Cody Gakpo and club icon Mohamed Salah on either side, while the highly impressive Hugo Ekitike leads the line.

(4-3-3): Alisson; Frimpong, Konate, Van Dijk, Kerkez; Mac Allister, Gravenberch; Gakpo, Szoboszlai, Salah; Ekitike.

Arsenal

David Raya has started the season in outstanding form for Arsenal, and it will take an unforeseen injury problem to keep him out of the team to face Liverpool.

The Arsenal number one will be protected by the stingiest rearguard in the Premier League.

William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes are expected to hold down the fort at the heart of the defence while Myles Lewis-Skelly and Jurrien Timber line up on either side of the back four.

Martin Zubimendi, Declan Rice, and Martin Odegaard will run the show from midfield, although injuries could force Arteta to tweak his set-up.

Arsenal’s frontline has yet to provide the spark that many fans have become accustomed to, but that shouldn’t force Arteta to make any knee-jerk decisions.

Gabriel Martinelli should retain his place on the left flank, although summer arrival Noni Madueke will be pushing for a place in the starting line-up.

The ever-reliable Bukayo Saka will slot in at right wing, while Viktor Gyokeres leads the line.

(4-3-3): Raya; Lewis-Skelly, Gabriel, Saliba, Timber; Zubimendi, Rice, Odegaard; Martinelli, Gyokeres, Saka.
