Arsenal have held talks with agent of Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins

Arsenal have spoken with the representative of Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins regarding a summer transfer, according to Record (page 12).

The Gunners are determined to sign a new centre-forward after another frustrating Premier League season where they finished runners-up.

Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres was reportedly the top target earlier this week, but Arsenal have decided to ‘freeze‘ their pursuit due to the price tag.

The London giants are ‘fed up’ with Sporting CP’s demands (£68 million) and have decided to look at alternative options to the Swede.

RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko and Villa’s Watkins are on the club’s radar, and Record have provided additional information on the latter.

The Portuguese outlet mention that Arsenal had a meeting with Watkins’ agent this week.

There was an openness in discussions, and a deal could be closed quickly if necessary.

The England international could be purchased from Unai Emery’s side for around £40m.

Arsenal could consider Watkins as a fallback option

The Gunners recently spoke with the representative of Gyokeres. The 27-year-old gave the green light to join the club amid interest from Manchester United.

However, Arsenal seem reluctant to pay over the odds for his services. They have made an opening offer worth £55m and have no plans to meet the £68m valuation.

Sesko is likely to be the immediate alternative. The Gunners have been in concrete talks with Leipzig for the striker, who has a £68m release clause in his contract.

Arsenal could pay a higher fee for Sesko to negotiate a long-term payment plan. It would be worthwhile, considering his age (22) and immense potential.

If there is no breakthrough in talks for either striker, Watkins could be the fallback option. The Englishman has a proven Premier League record during his time at Villa.

He registered 17 goals and 14 assists from 54 appearances for Villa across all competitions last season. 24 of those goal contributions came in the English top flight.

Villa turned down a £40m offer from Arsenal for Watkins last winter but could be tempted to accept a similar proposal, given their tight financial situation after missing out on Champions League qualification.

The Midlands outfit may require a big-money sale this summer to avoid breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules. Watkins could be permitted to depart for a £40m package.
