Arsenal have the upper hand over Real Madrid to sign one of Spain’s best midfielders, according to AS (page 13).
The Gunners are expected to reinforce their midfield department during the summer transfer window.
The club have identified Martin Zubimendi as the priority target, and talks are advanced to sign him.
Real Madrid are also pursuing the 26-year-old, but AS claim that Arsenal are in ‘pole position’ to seal the deal.
The Gunners initially wanted to sign Zubimendi from Real Sociedad this winter, but the club and player agreed to postpone his sale until the end of the season.
Arsenal are expected to return for the Spaniard this summer, with manager Mikel Arteta being a ‘great supporter’. They are willing to pay his £50 million release clause.
Madrid are aware of the Gunners’ long-term pursuit and are at a ‘disadvantage’.
Zubimendi would be a statement signing for Arsenal
The Gunners did not make any first-team signings during the winter transfer window, and they are poised to go on a spending spree at the end of the campaign.
A new marquee defensive midfielder is being prioritised with Jorginho and Thomas Partey touted to leave. The duo have their contracts expiring on June 30.
Zubimendi, described as ‘world-class‘ by Arsenal ace Kieran Tierney, has been on the Gunners’ radar for the past few years and would be a statement summer signing.
The Spaniard has established himself as one of the best La Liga midfielders. He has won almost 65 percent of his aerials duels this term with an average of 2.3 tackles.
The Euro 2024 winner has also made 4.4 recoveries per league game alongside 2.3 clearances. He would be an ideal replacement for Partey ahead of next season.
