Arsenal could make a surprise move to sign Inter Milan centre-back Yann Bisseck during the January transfer window, according to Inter Live.
The Gunners bolstered their backline this summer with the acquisition of Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna. The Italian has already made a couple of substitute appearances.
Jurrien Timber has also been like a new signing, having made just two appearances during the 2023/24 season after picking up a serious knee injury.
Despite this, the club continue to be linked with more defenders and Inter Live claim that Bisseck is ‘very much liked’ by Gunners manager Mikel Arteta.
Inter are open to sanctioning his sale for £21 million this winter, but a transfer could depend on whether the German wants to pursue a new challenge
Takehiro Tomiyasu has been on Inter’s radar in the past and it is reported that Arsenal could offer the Japanese to the Nerazzurri in a swap deal for Bisseck.
It is reported that Arsenal’s move for the 6ft 4inch ace could depend on Tomiyasu’s exit.
Arsenal unlikely to pursue another centre-back
The Gunners reinforced their central defensive department with Calafiori this summer, but he has operated from left-back in his first two appearances.
William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes are pretty much undisputed starters for Arsenal. They are likely to play every game, barring the Carabao Cup in our view.
Should they stay fit and firing, Arteta may not contemplate a change.
Keeping this in mind, we don’t see the club signing another centre-back. Calafiori, Timber, Tomiyasu, Jakub Kiwior and Ben White can also play in the heart of the defence.
Tomiyasu has been the most injury prone defender in the squad, but Arsenal have shown in the recent past that they won’t entertain any high-profile mid-season departures.
We simply don’t see the club parting ways with Tomiyasu this winter.
