Mikel Arteta provides injury update on two Arsenal stars ahead of Porto clash

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has provided an injury update on Takehiro Tomiyasu and Gabriel Martinelli ahead of the Champions League meeting against Porto tomorrow.

The Gunners are currently trailing 1-0 after the first leg of the round of 16 tie. They have the chance to overturn the deficit during the second leg at the Emirates Stadium.

Speaking ahead of the game, Arteta said that the club are trying to have everyone fit.

The Spaniard added that Takehiro Tomiyasu was involved in the first part of training, but Gabriel Martinelli wasn’t. The duo will be assessed ahead of tomorrow’s late kick-off.

He told reporters: “We still have 24 hours and we’re trying to have everyone fit for tomorrow. Tomi did the first part, Gabi didn’t. We’ll see.”

Judging by the manager’s update, it could more or less be the same squad from the Brentford win.

Tomiyasu has just returned to team training after an injury on Asian Cup duty. The 25-year-old may not be risked unless he passes a late fitness test before the European tie.

Meanwhile, Martinelli had a nasty cut on his left foot during the 6-0 win at Sheffield United. He was spotted leaving the Emirates on crutches following the victory over Brentford.

If he has not returned to training yet, it is more likely that he won’t be involved against Porto.

Leandro Trossard started on the left wing in his absence at the weekend, but he was largely ineffective.

In our opinion, Gabriel Jesus could get the nod on the left flank ahead of the Belgian. He has been in terrific form in Europe with four goals and two assists in five outings.
