Newcastle United legend-turned-pundit Alan Shearer has picked Arsenal midfielder Jorginho and manager Mikel Arteta in his Team of the Week following the impressive 3-1 Premier League win over Liverpool on Sunday.
The Gunners made it three victories on the bounce after a dominating performance against the Reds at the Emirates Stadium. The club were clearly the better side in the opening half and should have scored more than once.
However, they ended up conceding an equaliser after a defensive mishap which led to Gabriel Magalhaes deflecting the ball into his own net. Liverpool started the second half in blistering fashion, but Arsenal managed to keep their composure.
Liverpool made a defensive blunder of their own which allowed Gabriel Martinelli to make it 2-1. Leandro Trossard put the result beyond doubt with the club’s third goal in stoppage time. He made a wonderful solo run before scoring through the legs of Alisson via a slight deflection.
Jorginho was a key catalyst behind the victory with a man of the match performance. There were no surprises that he was adjudged the man of the match. The Italian won seven duels and made the most number of passes. He also made three interceptions, two tackles and two clearances.
Shearer has now picked him in his Team of the Week and said that his passing and big-game experience were both key as Arsenal won the midfield battle and played through Liverpool’s press.
The Magpies legend also selected Arteta as the manager of Gameweek 23 as he masterminded the victory. Shearer said that the Spaniard won the tactical battle and his substitutions had a bigger impact than Jurgen Klopp’s in what was a crucial win for the north London club.
Arsenal’s victory over Liverpool has brought them within two points off the top of the table. They are still third in the standings behind Manchester City, who have a better goal difference and a game in hand.
Hence, the Gunners face a tight challenge in the title race. They must continue their winning streak against West Ham United this weekend. The club failed to beat the Hammers thrice last year.
This includes defeats in the Carabao Cup fourth round and Premier League this term. Arsenal were guilty of missing five big chances in the 2-0 loss at the Emirates Stadium shortly after Christmas.
They have the opportunity to make amends with a strong display and a victory at the London Stadium.
