Mikel Arteta should start Emile Smith Rowe in midfield after Kai Havertz suspension blow

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta should start Emile Smith Rowe in the centre of the park against West Ham United following Kai Havertz’s suspension.

Havertz has been one of the Gunners’ most-improved players since the last international break with four goals.

The German scored a late winner at Brentford and also netted a key equaliser in the 4-3 comeback win at Luton Town.

Unfortunately, the €55 million-rated star won’t be available to face the Hammers on Thursday night due to suspension.

Havertz picked up his fifth yellow card of the league campaign at Liverpool and will now serve a one-game ban.

Leandro Trossard looks to be Arteta’s go-to choice to replace Havertz in the number eight role.

The Belgian started against Wolverhampton Wanderers last month where he missed two big chances.

Trossard could get the nod again but in our view, Arteta should go with Smith Rowe in midfield alongside Declan Rice.

The 23-year-old impressed in his last start for the club against Sheffield United, registering an assist in a 5-0 victory.

He unfortunately picked up a knee injury in training after the game and has since played only 16 minutes in two outings.

We believe Smith Rowe should be backed from the XI against the Hammers in midweek as he offers better control and creativity from the central midfield role.

Trossard is more of a natural winger than a midfielder and lacks the positional sense.

Arteta’s other alternative would be to start Jorginho in the holding midfield position thus allowing Declan Rice to play higher up the field against his former employers.

We feel Rice is best suited in the number six position where he can dominate the proceedings with his physical presence and ability to win ground and aerial duels.
