Jorginho redeems himself with superb showing vs Brentford

Arsenal midfielder Jorginho produced a sublime performance during the 1-0 win over Brentford in the Carabao Cup third round last night.

The Italy international made a huge blunder in the north London derby over the weekend. He gifted cheap possession which allowed Spurs to score the equaliser in the second half.

Despite this, he had the complete backing from manager Mikel Arteta. The Spanish tactician handed him the captain’s armband against the Bees. He stood out with an outstanding midfield showing.

Jorginho had a nervy start in the opening five minutes, but managed to find his composure thereafter, winning an impressive nine out of his 11 duels against Thomas Frank’s side.

The 31-year-old also had 107 touches in the derby, completing 79 out of his 88 passes. He won a stunning seven tackles alongside three interceptions and two clearances.

His mistake at the weekend won’t be forgotten by some fans anytime soon, but he managed to redeem himself in what was a tough challenge for a much-changed Arsenal outfit.

A Reiss Nelson goal in the eighth minute proved the match winner, but it was far from straightforward.

Aaron Ramsdale made two quality saves to preserve the lead while Jakub Kiwior came up with a terrific goal line clearance for the Gunners during the final stages of the game.

Takehiro Tomiyasu also deserves a special mention. He was solid from right centre-back before moving into the right-back position. The Japan star made vital blocks in the box.

Amid the ongoing injury crisis, a number of squad players rose to the occasion and manager Mikel Arteta should be delighted. Arsenal will face West Ham United on the road in the fourth round next month.

The Gunners will be back in Premier League action against Bournemouth on Saturday. It remains to be seen whether Declan Rice will be fit to replace Jorginho in defensive midfield.
