Gary Lineker tips Arsenal to beat Manchester City to the Premier League title

Match of the Day host Gary Lineker believes Arsenal can win the Premier League title in the 2023-24 campaign after coming close last term.

The Gunners finished in second place behind Manchester City last term despite topping the Premier League for 248 days.

They have bolstered their squad this summer with the additions of England international midfielder Declan Rice, Germany international attacker Kai Havertz and the Netherlands international defender Jurrien Timber.

Arsenal will need to be perfect to pip Man City to the title, and the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea are also expected to challenge for the Premier League.

However, Lineker reckons the pain and experience of last season could be enough to push the North Londoners to their first title since 2004.

“’I am tipping Arsenal to win the title this season,” the former England international striker told the Sun.

“Maybe just to avoid being predictable but I do think they have had an impressive summer in the transfer market.

“Rather than demoralising them, going close and missing out last season will benefit Mikel Arteta’s side.

“Being in the title race has given them an experience that they didn’t previously have.”

A return of 50 points at the halfway stage last term put them on course to equal Man City’s record of 100 points, but they stumbled when it mattered most.

Arsenal won just five of their last 11 league games, and a lack of quality squad depth dealt a massive blow on their ambitions.

They are ready to go one better this term and manager Mikel Arteta and his players will put the lessons they learnt last term into good use.

The Emirates Stadium club have been dealt an injury blow heading into their first game of the new Premier League campaign against Nottingham Forest next weekend, with Brazil international striker Gabriel Jesus out for a couple of weeks.

Arteta will hope Eddie Nketiah and his other forwards can get the job done in front of goal in the absence of the former Man City star, and they need to hit the ground running in the new season if they want to win the title.
