Arsenal emerge as favourites to sign Xavi Simons

Arsenal have expressed the most interest in signing PSV Eindhoven prodigy Xavi Simons, according to Voetbal International.

Simons was a standout performer for PSV during the just-concluded Eredivisie campaign, racking up 19 goals and eight assists in 34 matches.

Unsurprisingly, the Dutchman is attracting interest from several teams around Europe including former club Paris Saint-Germain, who have a €12 million option to bring him back to Parc des Princes this summer.

However, Simons could be heading for the Premier League with last season’s runners-up Arsenal now firmly interested in acquiring his services in the upcoming transfer window.

Capable of playing multiple positions in midfield and attack, Simons’ versatility would certainly come in handy for Mikel Arteta’s men.

Simon is also only just 20 years of age and would be another youthful addition to an Arsenal side with the lowest average age of any Premier League side at the moment.

With PSV currently unsure of a Champions League spot, the Eredivisie giants could be bracing themselves up for the potential departure of Simons after he expressed his desire to participate in next season’s edition of Europe’s premier club competition.

“You don’t know what can happen in three or four weeks, but what I can say is that I am very grateful to be here and that I was able to prove myself at PSV,” Simons told De Telegraaf back in April.

“I still have five years contract here and in the summer I will have a conversation with Marcel (Brands) and everyone.

“I fight to the last for first place and not second place, but if we do not reach first place, it is very important for the club and everyone that we come second.

“It is also a big difference for the players whether or not you will play in the Champions League – that is a priority for me, it is also very important for my development.”
